The April Fool - Sowing the Seeds of Curiosity: A Tarot Journey of Self-Reflection
When I first drank in the sight of some beautiful fairy-themed cards on display on a Books-a-Million shelf in Tennessee, I was in love. The watercolor pictures of fae folk amidst earthy elements and animals spoke to a sense of wonder I’d long since abandoned.
Yet, I was simultaneously repulsed by the deep desire I felt. I'd heard horror stories of evil forces and exorcisms, and I cowered in fear of a God who would abandon me if I made a wrong move. I grew up being told that tarot was the "Devil's work" and a gateway to eternal Hell.
Standing with the deck in my hands, I felt a tug of childlike wonder toward the world of symbolism, magic, and mysticism. That creative part of me, the curious little girl who wanted to dance with the fae, was still there just waiting.
When I walked out of the store with the Mystic Faerie Tarot in hand, despite all terror, I did not experience sudden damnation or sinful thoughts. In fact, as I sorted through the cards and flipped through the book hidden away in my basement room, I found nothing trying to draw me to some “dark side.” Instead, I found that the stories depicted in the cards allowed me to see myself in a new way. The images depicted similar energies and symbolism to the circumstances in my life, and I began to feel empowered to think critically about my circumstances. The cards assisted me in looking at things from multiple angles.
When we use tarot as a means of self-exploration, we can become more conscious of our thoughts and actions, and make more informed decisions about our lives. For example, the Fool card may speak to our desire for adventure and risk-taking, while the Empress card may represent our nurturing and creative side. When we use symbolism to reflect, we may uncover hidden desires, fears, and motivations to better understand ourselves.
Now, well over a decade and twenty tarot decks later, I've healed from my prior spiritual wounds and released the damnation of generations before me. This has allowed me to understand and respect tarot for what it is: a tool and symbolism.
I believe no tool on Earth is evil if used for empowerment, healing, and reflection, and every story seeped in symbolism is a look into the human soul!
So, to bust some of the stigmas around those of us who like to collect, use, or enjoy tarot cards, I thought it would be fun to do an "April Fool" event!
I was inspired to dive deep this month because of "April Fool's Day."
What if we all acknowledged this archetypal Fool in ourselves?
What if we were to accept that we are all just stumbling along trying to make sense of an insanely complicated life and world?
Over the course of the month of April, I'll explore the journey of the tarot storyline through the lens of Living LUNA's April theme: Sowing Seeds of Curiosity. Each day, I'll share a little overview of each tarot card's general symbolism, post some reflection prompts, and an affirmation! May you use this opportunity to reflect on the multifaceted nature of human life!
