Systems of Oppression Actually Benefit from Our Self-Neglect
You know the bone-deep exhaustion that comes from giving everything to your mission? That feeling of being stretched so thin you can barely remember who you are beneath it all?
I've been there – managing 150 children as a public school teacher and then again as a therapist seeing 40+ clients weekly just to survive in a system designed to drain us.
My body literally screamed at me but I continued my gauntlet, until I developed fibromyalgia and the pain finally managed to get me to pause.
Reflecting now, the tough pill I had to swallow to break free was that systems of oppression actually benefit from our self-neglect.
When we're depleted, we have less capacity to challenge injustice, less energy to speak up, and less ability to create the change we're here to make.
Why This Matters Now More Than Ever
If you're an impact-driven leader, healer, or change-maker, you might recognize yourself in this cycle:
Your nervous system is crying out for rest while society keeps pushing you to do more
You've achieved all the "right" things but feel disconnected from your soul's truth
You're tired of sacrificing your wellbeing for a vision of success that doesn't feel like yours
Your body is sending signals through anxiety, chronic pain, or mysterious symptoms
You know you're here to make a difference, but the current way isn't sustainable
Breaking Free from the Productivity Prison
I learned the hard way that genuine self-care isn't about expensive spa days or performative wellness.
Real self-care looks like:
Sustainable rest that honors your natural rhythms
Boundaries that protect your energy and vision
Deep connection with your body's wisdom
Community care that supports collective healing
Ancestral wisdom that reminds us there's a way other than perpetual work and productivity
The Hidden Cost of Constant Production
When I finally allowed myself to rest — truly rest, not the manufactured "self-care" that capitalism tries to sell us — I tapped into my own body’s wisdom.
Our bodies carry ancient wisdom about cycles of effort and renewal. Just as the earth doesn't produce crops year-round, we weren't meant to operate in perpetual harvest mode. The problem is in an overly production focused world driven by a capitalistic machine, we think we’re supposed to be “on” all the time.
Have you noticed how our current systems mirror colonial patterns of resource extraction? We're taught to mine our energy reserves until they're depleted, treating our bodies like infinite resources to be conquered and controlled. This isn't an accident — it's a direct reflection of the same mindset that led to environmental exploitation and worker oppression.
Break Free from Believing “Productive = Worthy”!
Here's what I wish someone had told me when I was pushing through those 60+-hour work weeks.
Your worth isn't measured in billable hours or metrics. The system wants you to believe that your value comes from what you produce or how much you give, but that's the same lie that's been used to justify exploitation for generations.
But we can revolutionize the way we work by returning to that ancient wisdom — the natural cycles built into our very planet.
When we start to align with natural cycles, something magical happens.
We begin to notice:
The winter seasons of our energy, when our bodies crave stillness and integration
The spring moments of inspiration that can't be forced or scheduled
The summer periods of natural expansion and abundance
The autumn times of harvesting and letting go
Our nervous systems function best when we honor these natural ebbs and flows.
Decolonizing Our Relationship with Time & Creating Sustainable Change
One of the most radical things we can do is reject the industrial notion of time as linear and productivity as constant. Our ancestors knew better.
They understood that:
Rest is not just a reward for productivity
Community care and individual wellbeing are inseparable
Healing happens in spirals, not straight lines
Our bodies hold wisdom that predates capitalism
The real work of transformation happens when we start treating our bodies as allies rather than obstacles.
This means:
Learning to read our energy levels like weather patterns, understanding that both storms and sunshine serve a purpose.
Recognizing that our fatigue might be telling us something important about the systems we're operating within.
Honoring the wisdom in our resistance instead of forcing ourselves to push through.
The Path Forward: From Survival to Sovereignty
True liberation requires us to question everything we've been taught about success and worth.
It asks us to imagine: What would leadership look like if it grew from a place of wholeness rather than wounding?
How might we serve our communities differently if we weren't constantly operating from depletion?
These are practical considerations for anyone committed to long-term systemic change. The truth is sustainable activism requires sustainable activists. Lasting transformation needs leaders who know how to tend their own fires without burning out.
